Derek Jeter breaks Yankees all-time hits record

Derek Jeter got hit number 2,722 last night at Yankee Stadium, passing the great Lou Gehrig as the Yankees all-time hit leader. Here is a statement issued by George Steinbrenner:
"For those who say today's game can't produce legendary players, I have two words: Derek Jeter. Game in and game out, he just produces. As historic and significant as becoming the Yankees' all-time hit leader is, the accomplishment is all the more impressive because Derek is one of the finest young men playing the game today. That combination of character and athletic ability is something he shares with the previous record-holder, Lou Gehrig. It adds to the pride that the Yankees and our fans feel today. Every Yankees' era has its giants. It's thrilling to watch Derek as he becomes one of the greats of his generation, if not all-time."

He stepped it up this year all around. Nice to see that he's actually improving with age.

Reposting my thoughts on Jeter from last year, when he broke the all-time hits record at the old Yankee Stadium:

Why I love Jeter:

1996 Rookie of the Year

2000 World Series MVP

2000 All-Star Game MVP

The tone-setting leadoff homerun in the 2000 World Series

The great throw to home in the 2000World Series

"The flip" in the 2001 ALCS

The walk-off homer in the 2001 World Series

Crashing into the stands, diving for balls

Winning gold gloves at shortstop

Acting like a true captain by busting ass on every play, every game, and leading by example

Playing hurt and not talking about it

Using the whole field while hitting for average and some pop. Can go deep, or lay down a perfect bunt

Always KILLING the Red Sox and the Mets

The most clutch hitting Yankee I've ever seen. Ninth inning, two outs, winning run on second, there is nobody I've ever seen that I'd rather have at the plate.

Being under the microscope in NYC for all of his adult life and never saying or doing anything to embarrass himself or the team.

Four rings. Six pennants. Playoffs 13 times.

Being a member of the 1998 New York Yankees, the greatest baseball team of all-time.

And ... by the times he's done, he will have more hits than anyone that's ever worn the uniform and the first Yankee to reach 3,000 hits.

It has been a privledge to watch the man play.
