World Series Game 5: Phillies - 8, Yankees - 6

The Phillies got back into the World Series last night with a 8-6 win in Philadelphia. Burnett didn't have anything and was gone early. Girardi rolled the dice by throwing him on short rest, and some say he has greatly compromised the staff for the rest of the series. Some, however, are still saying it was the right move, and that he has always managed aggressively and was simply staying true to form. Throwing Gaudin - who hadn't pitched in a month - could have been viewed as the white flag vs. Cliff Lee. Joe went for the kill. It's one of those moves that if A.J. was on, would have been viewed as brilliant. The good news is that they did get to Lee and also managed to put a real scare into them in the 9th. The Phillies are the best opponent the Yankees have faced in a long time, but the Yankees are also the best opponent the Phillies have faced in a long time. They are not used to people punching them right back. In the American League, it happens all the time. This is how we play. This is what we do. This is hardball.
My goal was to split two in New York, go down to Philly and get one, and then come home and try and win two. We're in even better shape than that. And we are the best home team in baseball. And Andy says he feels great.
LET'S GO !!!

Personally, my mojo was way off yesterday. Wasn't feeling it. Didn't think they'd win three straight in Philly. Was very tired when the game started. Not my usual totally-injected self. Today, I'm starting to feel recharged. Very happy to get two of three in Philly. Glad to be heading back home. Totally jacked up for Wednesday night. Andy says he feels good, some of the better bullpen guys are still rested and so is Mo. And we've got our boy Pedro out there for Philadelphia.

The mojo is back.

Reading the New York papers also has me feeling good. Even Lupica has been very postive. - Alan

All of my Phillies friends still think it's the Yanks' series to lose. No one seems all that excited about last night's win. In fact, they are talking about how the Yanks almost came back to win it. I take nothing for granted. The Yankees have blown a 3-1 series lead before, and I worry about the pitching staff. Still, I'm feeling very excited for Game 6. Let's go.... Bake

Take Phil Coke out of the equation, and you're tied at 6. Like the YES guys said..I don't think you'll be seeing him again anytime soon. Never thought I'd prefer to see Marte in a situation, but I would have. I think Girardi was playing as if this one was lost, and looking forward, but probably didn't bank on us scoring 5 off Lee, and coming (almost) all the way back. If we lose this thing, Phil Coke giving up TWO dingers..to lefties no less..was key.

I agree, Bake. No boasting unless they close the deal. Lots of teams have come back from down 3-1, including Matt's Pirates in '79. I have come to repsect the worthy opponent, and I'm sure the yankees do as well. But they ain't afraid of anybody, and neither am I.

This is hardball.

Francesa on WFAN predicts a slugfest in Game 6. Says we could see Mo in the 7th if Yanks have lead.

With the exception of last night, the Yankee starting pitching has been really good. It's time for the offense to win a game and pick up the pitchers. We need a few big hits from Tex and Cano. We need the bottom of the order to at least get on base. Need to put up a really big inning or two and get the ball to Mo.

I like that, with the exception of Melky, we have our full lineup in the game tonight. Nice to see Jorge and Matsui back. Wonder if he'll sit Swish again? The move worked in Game 2 vs. Pedro.

Here come the - YANKEES
Let's shout and cheer them they're the YANKEES
Everyone fears them they're the YANKEES!!!!

I'm feeling good about tonight. Pedro is Pedro - nothing to fear. Their pen is hittable. Some big bats are due for the Yanks, Tex and A-Rod (though the latter has had some key hits) cannot be denied, Damon could be key as well.

Jeter, Posada, Pettite and Mo will all play in this game. Baseball writers will eat that up.
The Stadium That Ruth Built And George Moved Down The Street will be rocking!

It seems to me the loudest the Stadium has been this postseason was Game 6 of the ALCS vs. the Angels.

Tonight, Andy mans up.

Tonight, it rocks even louder. -

Hey people ... the Yanks almost won the World Series on Monday night against the Phillies best pitcher and with what was probably the worst offensive lineup they've put on the field in 40 years.

Stay positive!

I am feeling very uptight about Game 6 tonight. Wounded dogs are usually hard to put down and the Phillies pride has been wounded. The Yankees taking 2 in Philly and almost coming back to win Game 5 really put the Phils back on their heels. Howver, in a game like tonight all you need is some weird stuff to happen like a few dinks and dunks and then a blast and we go to Game 7. What bothers me more is that Joe West will be behind the plate tonight. He has more chins than a Chinese phone book and is notorious for a floating strike zone. If Andy does not get the corners, it will be a long night. The umps did not give Burnett the outside corner strike on lefties and that caused him to throw over the middle of the plate. We all know what happens when you throw over the middle to guys like Utley.

Overall, I think this will be one wail of a game except for Buck and McCarver constantly talking up Pedro. Last time he pitched I almost vomited. They called him crafty, intellegent, a warrior, a misunderstood man. The story of him being at home with his mother tending her garden took me over the edge. I actually muted the sound for a half of an inning. Everyone should email Fox Sports and tell them how sick and tired we are of Joe Bucks bias against the Yankees and Tim McCarver's senility.

This is a big game tonight. We need a gem from Petite and some hitting from Tex, Cano and the bottom of the order. Jeter, Damon and Posada can only carry them so far. We also need to not have a fastball or breaking ball come anywhere near the middle of the plate for Utley. I'd walk him and let Howard beat me at this point. The Yanks need to take Pedro deep into counts to tire him out. They need to get on base and move runners.

Let's Go YANKEES!

Jim

Everybody gets uptight, worrying about the game and thinking of all of the worst things that can happen, but maybe the Yanks come out and score seven runs in the first two innings for a change and we get a laugher.

It just might happen. - Alan
