Mo gets 500th save

The great Marino Rivera earned his 500th career save last night, helping the Yankees sweep the Mets at their own ballpark. 500 saves. That's more games than three FULL SEASONS of baseball. Unreal. There's nothing else that really needs to be said, except "Thank you" to the great, great Mo.

Simply the best

There is nothing like seeing that bullpen door open to the sound of "Enter Sandman." It is one of the coolest things in professional sports.

Never thought about it that way. It's the equivalent of him coming out and saving every single game for more than three years. Mo is the man.

Did you see the long hug Jeter gave him after the game? Jeet usually doesn't do that. They said on YES that he leaned into Mo's ear and said "You're the best."

A milestone for Mo, 500 saves. As of my comment, Mo has 21 saves, just 2 behind the league leader who has 23. For all of those people that keep saying that Mariano is getting too old I say, Go Pound Sand. I'm trying to be nice there. He is still one if not the most effective closer in the game. If I owned a team, he would be the guy that I would want. The big thing about Mo is his consistency over the years. I was debating with my 13 year old son, who by the way is very in tune with baseball and it's stats on whether Mo is slipping. My answer to him was, he is still one of the best in the game but is no longer immortal. The only question I have is how much longer can he play. I'm thinking 3 to 5 more years.

The other question is who will be his replacement. For the past year, I thought it would be Joba Chamberlain. However, right now I am starting to think that Philip Hughes can actually be a closer. This is something to really think about. For one to two innings, he can throw 95 to 97 mph and has a change up and good slider. The thing I really like about Hughes is that he has been throwing strikes since being moved into a relief role. Right now, I think Hughes is the set up man that the Yankees are looking for. It's time to quit thinking that Brian Bruney can fill this role. Hughes to Mo, I like it.

Mo saves the All-Star game. That was his forth All-Star save. He's now pitched eight innings in All-Star games and has yet to give up a run.
