One of our more frequent comment posters wants to discuss Yankees pitching coach Dave Eiland. His thoughts: "I'm calling for Dave Eiland's head. There has got to be an internal problem with this Yankee pitching staff. We have three top starters - Sabathia, Wang and Burnett - and none of them, short of Sabbathia, can pitch all of a sudden. What is going on here?" Joba has also struggled, as has most of the bullpen this season. Any thoughts on Eiland?

It's hard to determine the impact of a pitching coach. By the time they even get the the big leagues, a pitcher has already proven themself on so many levels, yet it seems they still need constant coaching. On the other hand, everybody loved Mel Stottlemyre, yet he was often working with guys like David Cone, David Wells, Andy Pettite, Roger Clemens, Mike Mussina, Jimmy Key and a younger Mariano Rivera. Guidry was knocked by some, but by the time he got there, the staff was no loner nearly as talented as what Mel was working with. Jury is still out on Eiland. Haven't heard any complaints from the staff, and if there were, you know they'd make it into the papers somehow. Right now, most of those type stories leaking involve Posada. Seems some guys - A.J., Sabathia and Joba - might not like pitching to him. This was also the case with Mussina and Johnson. Not sure what's up with that ... - Mel
I have been questioning Dave Eiland as well. He has a 19 game winner in Wang for the past two years that can't pitch all of a sudden (Knobloch syndrom), he has a young fireballer in Joba who can't dial it up to 94, 95 anymore, a promising righthander in Hughes who just can't make the jump into the starting rotation and a seasoned veteran in AJ Burnett who has lost it as well. We have had a long string of these pitchers going only 3 to 5 maybe 6 innings. We have terrible ball to strike ratios which elevates their pitch counts causing them to get pulled after 5tops. Sometime soon I think the Yankees need to look at Dave Eiland. The one thing that pops out in my mind is that Eiland worked with Hughes, Kennedy and other top notch prospects in the minor leagues and the results were all the same. They just can't make the jump into the bigs. By the way, Ross Olendorf who was traded to Piitsburgh in the Nady trade is starting and has 4 or 5 wins this season with a terrible team. I think that sums it up.
As for Posada, the pitching staff does not like pitching to him for a few reasons. One, He sets up his target way too late which distracts the concentration to the plate. Also, he simply can't throw out a runner anymore which causes the pitchers to lose their rhythm to home plate. It's time to move him into the DH role and use Cervelli behind the plate. He is batting over .270, is more mobile (as seen last night with that diving catch) and has a better arm. By the way, on that catch last night, Posada would not have moved from behind the plate.
I thin everything will stay status quo until the All Star game. By then they should be 6.5 to 7 games back.
