It's over

It's over. They're seven games out on September 1. No playoffs for the first time since 1995.

Most of you guys called it two weeks ago. Some did it two months ago. Today, I concede. I surrender. The fat lady has sung.

Lots of thoughts on this, but looking to 2009:

1. Sign Sabathia

2. Sign A.J. Burnett

3. Sign Texiera. A-Rod needs somebody with power and WHO HITS FOR AVERAGE hitting behind him.

4. Keep Moose and Andy, but only give one-year deals and not too much money.

Rotation:

Sabathia
Wang
Chamberlain
Mussina
Pettite

Anything you get from Hughes is gravy. Don't count on anything.

$85 million is coming off the payroll. It's time to re-shape this team.

Agree agree agree. I thought they should have made a play for Burnett this year, but it probably would not have helped this mess. I'm probably alone in this..REALLY alone..but I'd give Pavano another look if he pitches well down the stretch. We MAY be able to get him for a song, since he really won't have much bargaining power on the market, and he MAY feel a sense of debt to this team for, oh I don't know, forty MILLION dollars and like 12 starts or something..

I agree on Mussina, but not too sure about Pettitte..he stinks lately, and one of our big problems has been re-signing the "old guard" and having it blow up in our faces half the time.

It's too bad H&K have ZERO wins between them. If they showed ANYTHING this year, they could have been good trade bait..still could be, but not as much.

In any event..it's over. I don't even want to see a last ditch run..keep it. This team doesn't have what it takes to make it through the playoffs anyway. It would just be another horror show featuring our batting practice bullpen and Hollywood Rodriguez hitting .082.

Now I will commence my second-favorite sports-related activity...routing AGAINST Boston.

Go Rays!

I think Michael Kay is on board with the Pavano move, so at least you aren't alone.

Keep Moose, lose Pettite. Signing Texiera would be a good move but might be pricey because LA knows they need him as well. DO NOT sign Manny (I may be in the minority there, but as Berg said in another thread, "Once a Sox..."). He's a head case on top of that and the last thing the Yanks need is another disctraction.

Joba should be shut down for the season and sent home. No use even risking anything in the next few weeks. - Alan

What about the '09 outfield?

Matsui
Nady
Abreu
Damon
Cabrera
Christian
Gardner

If you go with four, who is it?

Lots of interesting stuff here. Today on WFAN, a guy said they may actually go out and get somebody to play CF, which means somebody really has to go. Also talk of moving Jeter to CF.

On another note, does anybody think they'd have had a better August and stayed in the race under Torre? - Mel

I don't know if they would have had a better August, but we're only talking a handful of games difference between making the post season & not. I'm certain that Torre wouldn't have stuck with Farnsworth as long as Giaradi did, that might have gained a few games. It's arguable...

What's not arguable is the final outcome. I do not think for a minute that Torre could have managed this team to the World Series this year, let alone a championship. Another one-and-out possibly, but that would be it. This is NOT a championship team, I've been saying that since the end of last year, and I'll say it again - this is NOT a championship team.

Maybe sitting some of the vets down on their a**es for October will kick them in the ass, and get them fired up for '09.

And my 2 cents on the outfield - Keep Nady, I think their stuck with Mastui for another year, let the rest go and get someone worthy of Center Field at Yankee Stadium.

Torre's Dodgers are 71-70..one game over .500...and they have quite a bit of talent on that team, so no...Torre would not have done any better. In fact, aside from a few questionable moves, I think Girardi has done a good job. I disagreed with more of what Torre did (like Proctor every day).

Time to start looking forward to a great new Stadium and a great new era in the House that A-Rod Built (?)

Yikes.

Agree on Girardi. Not his fault this year. Injuries, suspect pitching and lack of clutch hitting killed them.

I think '09 is going to be a lot of fun. - Alan
